Presentation Overview: Co-chairs of the Strathcona Food Bank (SFB), Kathryn Howden, BComm, RD and Tracey Cyca, MCA, will be presenting on the growing reali
ty of food insecurity in Strathcona County and the vital role the SFB plays in our community. They will share how SFB supports residents through food provision, volunteer engagement, and food rescue, and will outline plans for the new Nourish Centre - a purpose-built facility designed to provide safe, dignified, and sustainable food support. Members will also learn how they can be part of this community-led solution through volunteering, donations, and advocacy.
Kathryn Howden, BComm., RD is an award-winning public service leader with a strong commitment to innovation, collaboration, and community impact. With over 30 years of leadership experience in food services, retail, and ancillary operations, she has managed multi-million-dollar budgets and large teams, driving strategic growth and operational excellence.
As Co-Chair of the Strathcona Food Bank, Kathryn has spearheaded initiatives to enhance client service dignity, accessibility, and efficiency, securing over $1,750,000 in grant funding. Recognized for her contributions with multiple leadership awards, she balances her professional achievements with a passion for gourmet cooking, outdoor adventures, and community fundraising. A long-time Sherwood Park resident, she is a dedicated wife and mother of three young adults. Kathryn brings a dynamic blend of expertise, vision, and a people-centered approach to every role she undertakes.
Tracey Cyca, MCA brings over 20 years of teaching experience across distance, online, and in-person formats. She has also served as Faculty Liaison for MacEwan University Centre for Teaching and Learning and facilitated the Great Teacher’s Seminar in Banff and Ukraine. Her practical work has focused largely on marginalized populations, including roles in youth correctional facilities, a homeless shelter, and a treatment centre for individuals with substance use disorders.
A dedicated volunteer, Tracey has contributed from frontline shelter work to youth justice committees and board leadership. As a Board member of the Edmonton John Howard Society, she supported the expansion of services through the purchase of a youth transition facility. As Board president of her daughters’ swim club, she led a successful club merger. Most recently, as Co-Chair of the Strathcona Food Bank, she guided the transition to a governance board and helped launch the new Nourish Centre. She enjoys travelling, running, golf, skiing, and family time.
